Nabataean city of Petra

I watched a PBS program on the Dead Sea a few days ago and was fascinated by this city of Petra which was a thriving urban center for Nabataeans since some time BC. The city fell to ruins in the 4th c apparently. I would love to see it. It's spectacular in these photos...it must be breathtaking in real life. I am especially captivated by the way they carved the city right into the rocks, their ingenious and extensive water collecting and channeling systems and the beauty that age and weathering have created in the stone. These pictures were clipped from here and here and here and here.
